Salzburg, Austria 5/2/17

Up and at 'em for an 8:15 tour of Mondsee and Salzburg. We loaded the bus for the 1.5 hour trip to Mondsee, a beautiful village on a lake with an unusual mountain formation called Dragon Wall behind it.

Mondsee has become a destination due to the beautiful village church. It is where they filmed the wedding of Maria and Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. The church was chosen due to the many windows and the small size.

Next we headed to Salzburg, a city near the Austrian Alps. We toured the Mirabellgarten which was beautifully planted with tulips, pansies and interesting nearly leafless trees that look as if they might have inspired Dr. Suess.

We bought a print of Mirabellgarten that we will hang in our study, where we have art work from places we have traveled. The Do-Re-Mi scene was filmed in a courtyard of the gardens.

We saw many horse drawn carriages that seems like a good way to see Salzburg. We crossed a bridge that was full of padlocks. Lovers put their names on the locks and throw the key into the river. 

We took a walking tour through the Inner City and admired the baroque architecture and the narrow mideviel streets.

After the tour we had several hours for lunch and exploring. We chose a terraced restaurant called Stiegl Keller with Sharon and Rick, our new Edmonton friends. Rick and I shared veal Weinerschnitzl and a had a big wheat beer each. The setting was lovely in a garden setting with an incredible view of the city of Salzburg.

After lunch we wandered a bit, found and ATM and the WC - two important items. The bus ride home was restful through the verdantly green hillsides with the snow clad Alps in the background.

This evening we dined with Sharon and Rick from Calgary and enjoyed chatting with them and then hearing the "New Ohr Linz" Dixieland band play in the lounge. They were actually very good. We like how Uniworld brings one local talent and uses local guides for tours. Fun night!
